MANILA – Brent International School Manila students Alaina Bouffaut and Johan Joey Marcelo dominated the Under-15 category of the National Age Duathlon at the Ayala-Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite on Sunday.
The 12-year-old Bouffaut, the eldest daughter of a Filipino mother from Cagayan Valley and a French national, clocked 41 minutes and 48 seconds in the 3km run-10km bike-1.5km run event, beating Kaia Christiana Gica (42:32) and Naomi Rozeboom (42:44).
She also won in aquathlon (400m swim-2.5km run) last Saturday with a time of 18 minutes and 17 seconds, prevailng over Christy Ann Perez (18:35) and Naomi Rozeboom (18:45).
"I feel good. It's nice to win, this is my first time competing in the U15 category," said the Grade 7 student who dominated the 11-12 category for two years.
Marcelo bagged the gold medal in the boy's division with a time of 35:30. Diego Jose Dimayuga (35:39) took the silver and David Mora (35:44) got the bronze.
"I felt that I'm going to get a podium, but not the gold," said Marcelo, who is in Grade 8. He is a member of Sante Barley Nextstep Tri Team.
"I was not feeling well since Wednesday, I just took a rest. I'm happy that I won," added Marcelo, who won a silver medal in Ironkids Subic and a bronze in Ironkids Duathlon in Davao last year.
Meanwhile, Franklin Yee and Merry Joy Trupa ruled their respective divisions in the sprint elite category (5km-20km-2.5km) of the competition organized by Triathlon Philippines (TriPhil) headed by Tom Carrasco.
The 23-year-old Yee, representing the Asian Orthopedic Triathlon Team, clocked 57:13 to beat Irienold Reig Jr. (57:16) and Patrick Ciron (57:26) in the men's division.
"I'm glad to finish the race without any injury. I'm always thankful to God for all the blessings," said Yee, who hails from Bogo City, Cebu. He is a third-year business management student at the University of San Carlos.
Trupa, 22, topped the women's division in 1:05:41. Katrina Salazar (1:05:56) and Rachel Sarah Wei Ying (1:06:57) placed second and third, respectively.
"I'm so happy, I didn't expect to win," said the fourth-year agri business student at Tarlac Agricultural University in Camiling.
Both Yee and Trupa qualified for the 2025 World Games scheduled Aug. 7-17 in Chengdu, China.
Ruan Azriel Santos and Jan Christel Culanag were also crowned champions in the 6-year-old and under category of the National Age Group Aquathlon and Duathlon, which is part of TriPhil's grassroots and talent identification program. (PNA)
