ISTANBUL – A consortium led by American businessman Bill Chisholm has reached an agreement to purchase NBA franchise Boston Celtics for a record USD6.1 billion, marking the most expensive team sale in North American sports history, according to US media reports.
The Celtics, previously acquired by the Grousbeck family for USD360 million in 2002, have now changed ownership after 23 years in the landmark deal.
As the most successful team in NBA history with 18 championships, the Celtics currently boast a roster featuring stars such as Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford.
The reigning champions hold a 50-19 record this season, ranking second in the Eastern Conference.
Previously, the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL) were sold for USD6.05 billion, while another NBA team, the Phoenix Suns, changed hands for USD4 billion. (Anadolu)
